FALLS CREEK

RUINED CASTLE TRAILS

The Ruined Castle area is a Mecca for those skiers at level three and above, this is can make good parallel turns and handle some speed. On the right of the Ruined Castle chair lift is the Ruined Castle runs and on the Left is the South Face. Just a tip both are very popular always check with the people sharing your chair on the lift what way they intend to go. The section of trail map below is this area. Behind it you will notice Mt McKay see the page on this and my comments.

TRAIL MAPS RUINED CASTLE AND SCOTT'S

The snowmaking to these areas along with a good lie that captures good natural falls Ruined Castle remains a favourite, it often lasts the longest in poor conditions but can get icy. I remember skiing here two years ago in teaming rain with about three other people, it was a fantastic day.

RUINED CASTLE AREA LOOKING TOWARDS SCOTT'S

SOUTH FACE

This is the area that Big Dipper used to be in, I believe after a number of injuries this cornice was blown away over summer months, its a shame I loved that drop.

There is still great skiing here though with a steep section close to the Chairlift that gets some nice bumps on. The main section is steep and fast and not a bad length back to the lift line.

If you want to get to Dickie Knees though take the lift back up and ski down Ruined Castle.

LOOKING UP RUINED CASTLE JUNE 2000

RUINED CASTLE

Ruined Castle is normally the peak run for Intermediates, its steep enough to get in trouble but a great spot to have a fun day. It is a reasonably wide run with enough room to traverse if you get worried.

Ruined Castle has magnificent views over Rocky Valley Dam, I often stop up the top and just take in the beauty of the place (When my time comes that's where I want my ashes buried).

Another good thing here is that you get a nice lift ride up resting the legs, ski for an hour or so, stop at Dickie Knee's for a drink and back into it.

You can reach here by taking Eagle Chairlift from the Bowl and heading right, past the weather protection hut and follow Scott's down to Dickie Knees.

SCOTT'S RUN FROM SCOTT'S LIFT

SCOTT'S AREA

Scott's was named after a local guy Bob Scott killed in the construction of the original Sunny Valley T Bar that was located here. As you get on the lift on the main support on the RHS of the loading gates you will see a plaque to him. The school in town also has a memorial to him.

Scott's is a nice run it is similar to Ruined Castle but on the right hand side of the Scott's Chairlift is the race course. This is open to the public a lot but remember there is a lot of nitrate dropped here so its hard and fast. I have seen a few very bad accidents here including a fatal some years back.

All that said Scott's is a great spot, there is a nice gully on the left hand side and a fast little black run through the trees there.

Scott's has a brick hut at the top that is nice and warm on those cold days but remember this, the chairlift is one of the coldest rides in Australia when the wind
picks up, if you have kids put them in the middle on those days to keep the wind off them.
